The project - 1972 Series III 88"

I can recall a conversation at a local Land Rover meet, surrounded by about a dozen old Landies – ‘Once you buy one, you’ll want to buy more’ – to which I thought ‘Not a chance!’. Well, it turns out they were right. Within a year of getting my Defender 90 I started looking at acquiring an older vehicle in decent condition that I could take on as a project.

While I did as much as possible on the Defender, as a daily driver so it simply wasn't feasible to do all the work myself – therefore, a Series was an opportunity to learn with less electrics and no strict deadline. For months, I trawled sales listings looking for the right car – something easy enough for an amateur to tackle but decrepit enough to meet the challenge and budget restraints I had.

After a few false starts, I found a good contender to rebuild. With some help along the way, it's now got a restored interior, overhauled driveline and a rebuilt 2.25L diesel motor. I got it back on the road at the start of 2025 and there's been some very fun adventures in it since!
